On this episode of the Jason Cavness Experience I talk to Jimmy Song – Bitcoin Developer, Educator and Entrepreneur.

Jimmy Song is a Bitcoin developer, educator and entrepreneur. He's an open source contributor to many different Bitcoin projects and is the author of Programming Bitcoin from O'Reilly, The Little Bitcoin Book and Thank God for Bitcoin. Jimmy writes a weekly newsletter, Bitcoin Tech Talk and has a podcast Bitcoin Fixes This.

Jimmy tells us exactly what is Bitcoin and how society as we know it is changing because of Bitcoin. He explains how Bitcoin is actually not a drain on resources and that most people have no understanding of how this works.

We talked about the challenges of making a living as a Bitcoin Miner and that it is not easy and it is very resource restrictive to do so as an individual.

Jimmy talks about his entrepreneurial journey and why he choose the startup life. He tells us why it is important for development projects to be open sourced and how that contributes to the future of software development. He explains what got him started with coding at such an early age and how it is part of him.

He tells us what startup founders should look for in their Board of Advisors. He also explains why he says yes to some offers and no to other offers to be on startup companies Board of Advisors.

Jimmy explains how he feels like he is between 2 cultures as his family moved to the U.S. from South Korea when he was a child. I talk about my family's time in South Korea while I was in the U.S. Army and how high tech everything is there.

We discussed how Russell Okung of the Carolina Panthers took his salary in Bitcoin. Then how Jimmy believes more and more people will be doing this.

Jimmy goes into detail about being a carnivore and how that lifestyle has improved his health. He tells us how eating meat is more healthy and beneficial than a plant based diet. I talk about how Joe Rogan is also a big proponent of the carnivore diet.

Jimmy has the following advice for us.

One of the nice things about Bitcoin is that it does give you what we in Bitcoin called low time preference. The tendency in our society today is to be very high time preference. We want things right now and consume things right now. This is how the monetary system is designed. It's designed to enslave you through that, it lets you consume first and pay off later.

But that unfortunately enslaves you in ways that you don't really understand until later. With Bitcoin, you get the opposite. It's about saving and then getting things afterwards. That's a lot more rewarding a lot better for character and a lot better for civilization.

I would say the real fruit of Bitcoin is that ability to think long term and, and if there's one thing that I would encourage your listeners to go figure out is how to think long term and how to change the incentives in your life. So that you're thinking long term because it's a lot better, a lot more rewarding. A lot better for society and civilization.
