Talk from the Talent Desk

Talk from the Talent Desk

Still confused about the who, what, how, why and where of the TV industry right now? Who can blame you, it's baffling.

There's been news of closures and commissions, good and bad themes from Edinburgh TV Festival, and a ton of fabulous content we've laughed and cried at.

So join in diving headfirst into this madness and trying to make sense of it together, with this week's edition of Talk from the Talent Desk.

The art of the subtle photobomb, as demonstrated by Tors

Here's what freelancers are saying to us:

  • "I still don't know whether to stick this out". Some people's phones are starting to ring again, and that phrase 'green shoots' is being banded about, but is this enough of a reason to wait it out and not pursue a job outside of TV? Tough call.?
  • "I was perfect for the job. I don't understand why I didn't get it." It's fine to respectfully?ask why they chose someone else - especially if you were interviewed. You deserve feedback. But trust us when we say that you probably? were just as good for the job - it's just that there were 5 perfect people and only 1 role. No less galling, but not personal.
  • "How was Edinburgh?" Kimberly hotfooted it up to the TV Festival to speak on a panel about the Freelancer Crisis. Read our highlights?below and this blog post about the vibe, the best sessions and what's next for TV.?

What clients (indies, broadcasters, streamers)?are saying to us:

  • "We're trying to get back to everyone who applied, but it's hard with the volume." Not if you have the right systems in place folks (ask us).
  • "Commissioners are behaving badly." There are projects getting?greenlit, then de-commissioned within weeks, sometimes days with no support for the indies who've crewed up and speedily started production to meet deadlines. Not cool.
  • A medium sized indie MD: "We're getting more traction now than 6 months ago". And other senior developers telling us the same thing. This is good news.
  • One broadcaster this week told us they have lots in production right now, and will begin?recommissioning again in the new year.

What team TP are discussing:

  • Class. A big theme of Edinburgh TV Festival, and the category of 'low socio-economic background' that feels most complex to 'qualify'. We're working on how to improve our comms and your experience with disclosure on this topic, but you can tell us about your background whenever you update your CV with us.
  • We were excited when?TP candidate Paul Hulligan told us that his?Doc in a Day competition is back on 21/22 Sep. Kimberly was on the judging panel of this brilliant, down to earth event last year - it's a great way to get active and creative for your showreel or simply your sanity.?Watch previous years films, find out more and book your early bird £20 place here.
  • Juggling holidays and children. Not literally, but actually, sometimes it feels like it. Also, to camp or not to camp, that is the question... a topic that divided team?TP!?

I am falling back on Corporate and branded content at the moment, so surviving. I've been in this business long enough to know that as much as it means the world, many do not respond to your applications. Good news was that a year after working on a series with Truenorth Television, they invited me to a wrap party for that series and I managed to network and discuss career options with series producers.
