Talk to Anyone, Be Understood by Everyone: GenAI for Better Conversations
Talking with people can really help us grow and reach our goals. Doing it better can get us there faster.
The ancient Greek demigod Perseus, renowned for his courage and cunning in slaying the Gorgon Medusa, embodies the human spirit of adaptation. Like countless individuals throughout history, Perseus faced daunting challenges and sought to transcend his limitations. Even when pushed to the brink, his ability to reason and reflect allowed him to strategize and overcome adversity.
Perseus's legend serves as a powerful metaphor for the role of technology in human evolution. Just as Perseus wielded tools and his intellect to achieve his goals, so too does technology amplify our innate capacity to adapt and thrive.? From the earliest stone tools to today's artificial intelligence, technology extends our reach, allowing us to navigate a complex world and shape our destinies.
The parallels between Perseus and persuasion, seemingly disparate concepts, reveal a deeper truth. Both words share a common etymological root in the Latin "persuadere," meaning "to convince through reason." This linguistic link underscores the idea that human ingenuity, like Perseus's heroic feats, is fundamentally intertwined with our ability to communicate, influence, and adapt to our surroundings.
As we stand at the cusp of a new technological era, the story of Perseus reminds us that our tools are an extension of ourselves. By embracing technology thoughtfully and ethically, we can enhance our ability to reason, connect, and overcome challenges, ultimately shaping a future that reflects our highest aspirations.
Move 78: From Project Inception to Idea Refinement
In the fast-paced corporate world, professionals often feel pressured to act decisively, leaving little room for thoughtful reflection. However, the right mindset, supported by GenAI tools, can create the space and time for professionals to navigate complexity and drive better outcomes.
The Move 78 Playbook, supported by a dedicated Tmpt.me AI assistant, empowers designers to embrace a Perseus-like mindset: to reason, reflect, and strategize before taking action. This community-driven framework, designed as a preparatory step for design projects, champions human involvement and designer participation in AI-augmented design.
Move 78 Playbook and Tmpt.me users have organically progressed from focusing solely on the fuzzy front-end of service design to refining ideas for more informed decision-making, and ultimately, to constructing persuasive arguments. This evolution, while unexpected, now seems inevitable.
The Move 78 workshops have cultivated this evolution through three paradigm shifts:??
By enabling rapid reflection, these paradigms have profound implications for how professionals can leverage GenAI to enhance their decision-making and execution.
GenAI: A Lens for Sharper Conversations
The paradigms of Move 78, when applied to interactions with GenAI tools like large language models, offer a compelling analogy: they act as a lens for our thoughts, similar to how resolution enhancement or filters function for an image. This process allows us to refine our ideas, enhancing comprehension and revealing nuanced perspectives that might otherwise remain hidden.
A great example of that application was suggested by Lucas Camargo, a brilliant service designer and one of Tmpt.me’s 230+ beta testers in my Service Design Hub. He likens that process to "using Instagram filters to enhance an image, helping me to experiment and refine thoughts until the clearest and most impactful version is achieved" (in Portuguese).
In Lucas’ professional experience as a service designer, this GenAI-powered "lens" acts as a guide, filtering noise and highlighting the essential. It fosters clarity, personalization, and efficiency in our learning and decision-making journeys.? Moreover, it empowers professionals to craft compelling, "high-resolution" arguments that resonate with and persuade others.
