Tales Of A Recovering Perfectionist

Tales Of A Recovering Perfectionist

My name is Shelagh and I am a recovering perfectionist.

My particular addiction to perfectionism isn't in day-to-day deliverables - I am good at embracing the concept of "done is better than perfect" and "good enough for now".

Where I have been coached, and continue to be coached, is measuring my success solely on achieving the perfect results of my goals.

What does this look like?

Shifting feelings of success based on final revenue to measuring the success of the journey to revenue. For example:

  • The quality of clients I work with.
  • The joy in the day-to-day of my work.
  • The deep satisfaction and fulfillment I feel come from my work.
  • The confidence and clarity from which I operate.
  • The powerful decisions I made throughout the revenue journey.
  • The ease and efficiency with which my team operates...

... to name a few.

I keep being asked how my TedX Talk was.

The perfectionist in me says "not great" because I was disappointed in the delivery of it - it didn't feel natural and I didn't find my flow. The final result wasn't "perfect".

But through working with my coach this week, I can say it was an incredible experience because I am shifting to measuring the success of the journey to the red circle on stage.

I am moving away from "it wasn't perfect" to:

  • I was thrilled at having been chosen from thousands of applications.
  • I loved working with my speaking coach to write and prepare the talk - i've never done anything like that before.
  • I was honored to go first - knowing there are so many women in my communities who want the experience too - now I can help them get there.
  • I did the absolute best I could in the moment.
  • I know the talk will impact social change when it comes to funding women entrepreneurs.
  • I have an incredibly strong talk that can be used in a multitude of ways for content and advocacy work. (Do you need me on YOUR stage? ??)
  • I did it. I did something really hard and I am proud of it.

It's the journey that is the most important - not just the end result.

Perfectionists of the world - I see you. I get you.

Together, we can shift to measuring the success of the journey too - it's way more fun!
