The work/family balance

How do you effectively balance work and family? It is never easy. You want to succeed at your career and climb the ladder to reach your goals, but you have a family that needs you and chores around the house that need you. So, what do you do? Here are a few tips for this Tuesday’s big question….

·        Try to limit those activities that do nothing but waste your time. When balancing work and family, it’s best to focus on those activities that are necessary to your family. Do not spend time doing things that nobody is really into or that just costs you money. Try to do things that you and your family really enjoy.

·        Learn to say no. Yes, even to your boss. Asked to stay late? Just say no. Always remember that even though your career is important, your family needs more from you. Jobs may come and go, but family is forever. Do the best you can at your job and go the extra mile when you are able, but never be afraid to say no when asked to do something that is more than expected and that may cut into your family time.

·        UNPLUG!!! I made that one all capitals because it is that important. Turn off the phone, cut the tv, turn off the laptop. Spend some real quality time with the family without devices. It may sound old fashioned, but a family game night is the most fun! Take a walk, read a story together, etc. Learn to listen and enjoy your family when you are with them.

·        Communicate with your boss.  Even if communication at your job is bad, you can still find a way to let your boss know how you are doing and what he can expect from you. If your company has an open-door policy, use it!
