The Talents of Autistic Adults are Helping Small Business Owners Impacted by COVID-19

The kindest and most compassionate people that I have ever met are on the autism spectrum. It’s Autism Awareness Day today, and I want to share with you a few things that may surprise you about adults on the autism spectrum. We love to smash stereotypes!

Many of our participants in our Spectrum Fusion community have earned degrees in art, media production, videography, and motion graphics. Our autistic adults are making the world a better place by sharing their skills and talents to help those in need; including small business owners whose livelihoods are affected by COVID-19. The strengths and talents of autistic adults are a benefit and an asset to society. Combined with their genuine desire to contribute to society, these individuals are making a significant impact on the lives of those around them.

Here are a few things that they have been up to lately:

Helping small businesses

Our participants are producing a promotional video for a small business, Zentflex, to help increase awareness of this revolutionary new toothbrush. Lee Haverman, designed this new toothbrush that just went to market, but launching a product in this current climate is challenging. Our adults in Spectrum Fusion Media are helping him with this challenge.

Texas Rock Gym is also a small business in Houston. They don’t make money when customers cannot climb the walls. Our participants are working together with Erik Calderon to help create videos from existing footage to produce training videos for their customers. The videos will help keep their clients engaged while they are waiting to come back to the gym!

Short documentary

The media team is working together to produce a short documentary about a man who has slipped through the cracks of society. This man is Harvey Smith. At one point, Harvey worked on oil rigs. He is intelligent but has been unemployed and living rough for many years. Sadly, he missed his autism diagnosis as a child and has never been understood by those around him, including his own family. The short documentary will raise awareness for the plight of Harvey Smith so that the community can come together and help this man who is living on the fringe of society.

A little help from our friends

Our participants realize that finding employment is not easy, so they are helping each other showcase their talents! We created Showcase Platforms on the Spectrum Fusion website (under the Reactor Room tab). Here, they bring together each person’s bio, photo, intro video, links to their portfolio, and testimonials so that each participant can show the world what they have to offer.

Adults on the autism spectrum are as individual as we all are. They will brighten up your day and allow you to see the world from a different perspective:) Autistic adults are loyal friends, employees, and they are fantastic humans. Together we are creating a world with increased inclusivity.
