The United States economy added 353,000 new jobs in January, similar to the gain of 333,000 in December. Job gains were most notable in professional and business services, health care, and retail. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.7 percent, and average hourly earnings rose by $0.19 to $34.55. Temporary help jobs decreased by 7 percent from the same month last year.
