The United States economy added 336,000 jobs in September, significantly more than economists predicted. Gains were led by leisure and hospitality, health care, social assistance, and professional, scientific, and technical services. The unemployment rate, at 3.8 percent, and the employment-population ratio, at 60.4 percent, were unchanged over the month. Average hourly earnings rose by $0.07, or 0.2 percent, to $33.88 and have increased by 4.2 percent over the past 12 months.
