Growing up in Kuala Lumpur, Calvern Tan 陈美佳 and her family of five shared a small living space. Motivated to improve their living conditions, she pursued a career in business. Eventually, her kind and nurturing nature drew her to the recruitment industry.

Known affectionately as "the sunflower of Perm," Calvern radiates a warm, bubbly, and positive energy that uplifts everyone in her presence.

Today, she leads Adecco Perm’s corporate function, overseeing specialized desks for administration, legal, human resources, accountancy, banking, and finance. Her strong work ethic and charismatic personality have contributed to her ranking among the company's top 10 billers for three consecutive years, exceeding revenue expectations by double-digit percentages, and serving as Adecco's Win4Youth ambassador, representing the company in its philanthropic efforts.

We sat down with Calvern for an interview to learn more about where she comes from, what keeps her motivated, and her team's goals for 2023.

What were some of the toughest moments that you experienced when you first came to Singapore?

Calvern: “I remember that at my lowest point, I only had $50 left in my bank account, and I was surviving on $2.50 economic rice. That experience taught me the importance and value of job security and stability. It's one of the reasons why I chose to work in recruitment - to help others achieve the sense of security and stability that I once lacked.”

What are a few pieces of advice that you would give to your younger self?

Calvern: “Firstly, I would encourage myself to keep moving forward and trust the process. I used to be timid and held self-limiting beliefs, but it was the tough moments where I stepped out of my comfort zone that led to the most growth. Secondly, to appreciate the small things and seize the opportunities that come.”

How would you describe your team?

Calvern: “They have been a constant source of strength for me, especially during challenging times. Watching them work tirelessly and dedicate themselves to the work that we do, inspires me to strive for more. Helping them to grow and impact more lives gives me a sense of purpose and motivation.”
