Talent Magnet, Technology & You

Talent Magnet, Technology & You

Welcome to this week's newsletter!

There's been a lot going on in San Francisco, and even more to come.

For my technical audience, the Snowflake Summit took place this week, and the Databricks Summit is happening next week. I'll be at Moscone for a few days.

Let's talk about "magnet to attract other people"

I can share this from my personal experience working with early-stage startups and founders. Their first pain point is revenue, and then comes hiring talent.

Sam Altman asked, Can you say what you mean by a magnet to attract other people?
Vinod Khosla: If you believe a company becomes the people it hires, then your key task becomes attracting the people. There's also using them productively. That's a management skill. But attracting people becomes who finds you attractive, and selling depends on magnets. Bill Joy was an incredible magnet even back then. Even though Open Source didn't exist the way it does today, people wanted to work with Bill and Andy. Even if Bill didn't do a day of work, he was more than worth it because he helped attract Eric Schmidt. I don't think Eric would have come work for me as a 25 year old, other than I did have a convincing power of why this was going to be large. For my data nerds, check out what happened in the data community.

Databricks acquires Tabular for $1B+

https://www.cnbc.com/2024/06/04/databricks-is-buying-data-optimization-startup-tabular.html

At a Summit conference in San Francisco, Snowflake announced plans to release open-source catalog software for Iceberg tables within 90 days. Tabular, a participant at the conference, has numerous clients and is exploring options with Databricks, which promotes its own open-source initiative called Delta Lake. Databricks aims to ensure interoperability between Delta Lake and Iceberg projects, potentially attracting Snowflake clients who adopt Iceberg tables. Tabular, founded in 2021, has secured significant funding and is backed by Altimeter Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, and Zetta Venture Partners.

Principles (book name) by Ray Dalio

Summary:1. Embrace Reality and Deal With ItLife throws curveballs. Instead of dodging, catch them. Assess situations with a clear, open mind. The first step is acknowledging what you're up against - only then can you strategize a winning move.

2. Pain + Reflection = ProgressEncountered a setback? Great! Here's where growth happens. Reflect on the pain, don't shy away from it. Understand its root cause, learn, and evolve. It's your stepping stone to a stronger, wiser you.

3. Be Radically Open-MindedThe world is vast, opinions are numerous. Cultivate the art of listening and considering perspectives other than your own. This openness can lead to unexpected, innovative solutions to your challenges.

4. Set Clear GoalsWhat's your target? Define it. Crystal clear goals are like a GPS for your life's journey. They keep you focused and guide your actions, ensuring every step you take is in the right direction.

5. Fail WellFailures are not the opposite of success; they're part of it. Embrace your failures, analyze them, and take away invaluable lessons. It's all about failing forward, using each experience as a ladder to your goals.
