A Tale of Two Countries

It's as if Americans are living in two countries. Almost half the nation live in States that are experiencing a lower mortality rate from COVID-19 than Germany. This is significant as Germany is held to be the poster child for getting the response to the pandemic right. Some States are very significant lower: Texas, with a population of 27 million, about half the rate; California, population 62 million, 20% less than Germany.
In fact California, with approximately the same population as Italy, Spain and Great Britain, has less than 10% of the deaths of any of those countries.
On the other end of the spectrum is New York State, with a mortality rate at a shocking 15 times greater than Germany, and 30 times that of Texas. Most of the disparity is the New York City, making the mortality rate comparisons a multiple of that of the State.
It can be seen from the map that the concentration of high mortality rates are in the crowded, principally North and North Eastern States, with the more sparsely populated West and South being generally spared. We suspect that a county map would show similar concentrations of mortality rates in the more crowded localities within the states.
So sad to see what’s happening. We are so blessed in Australia. Love and hugs going out to everyone in the states. Stay safe. Do the opposite of what your ‘leader’ is suggesting!

4 年That makes little sense to me. I witnessed the conversation, for example, in North Carolina, and didn't see any willful blindness. In fact, quite to the contrary. I wonder why we are so inclined to make such political good out of everything. I am sure everyone will blame whichever political party they happen to oppose. Why? Let's work toward a common goal.
