A Tale Of Two Companies

A Tale Of Two Companies

I recently spoke to a friend who works with a number of different companies.

He told me of how two recent start-ups he serviced had gone in vastly different directions.

One of them appeared to be steadily gaining in earnings and stability for the long haul. The other, whose future had looked equally promising a year ago, had fallen into a downward spiral.

The difference? The quality and cost of the company’s employee health insurance. You may wonder, can there really be such a great difference between competing insurance plans? Do those differences ever truly affect the fate of companies or their employees? The easy, one-word answer to both questions is “ Yes.”

The struggling company had one key employee who not only performed a crucial function at her own position, but made everyone around her better at their jobs.

Unfortunately, she fell ill. The company’s insurance provider refused to pay her claims, and she quickly fell into debt, then watched her health steadily deteriorate once she quit going to the doctor. Ultimately, she became unable to work, and the now-penniless former company “MVP” has moved back home to live with her family while she tries to repair her health.

No one equally capable could be found to replace her, and the company’s profits disappeared along with their star employee.

At the successful company, the business owner had taken the time to make sure he purchased quality commercial health insurance from a carrier with high customer satisfaction ratings. Employees felt free to seek treatment at the first signs of serious illness. The end result? Fewer sick days taken, greater employee retention, happier and more productive workers.

Of course, there was a significant price difference between the two policies. But not in the way you might suspect. Even though both policies covered approximately the same number of employees, the company with the superior coverage was paying only three-quarters of the premiums of the company with poor coverage.
