A Tale of Trauma, Resilience and Healing

The holidays offered me (and my family) a chance to get back to the theaters several times to see some great, impactful films. Hayao Miyazaki has once again touched our hearts with his latest film, "The Boy and the Heron". This enchanting story isn't just a feast for the eyes; it's a deep dive into dealing with adversity and trauma. Mahito, a young 12-year-old boy, struggles to settle in a new town after his mother's death. However, when a talking heron informs Mahito that his mother is still alive, he enters an old abandoned tower built by his grand uncle in search of her, which opens a gateway taking him to another world and an epic adventure. Here are three vital lessons we can take from this cinematic gem:

  1. Embracing Change as an Opportunity: The protagonist's journey teaches us that change, though often daunting, can lead to new beginnings. Whether it's a career shift or personal upheaval, embracing change rather than resisting it can open doors to unexpected opportunities.
  2. The Power of Connection and Empathy: "The Boy and the Heron" beautifully illustrates how empathy and forming connections can aid in healing. In our professional lives, this translates to building strong, empathetic relationships with colleagues and clients, fostering an environment of mutual support and understanding.
  3. Resilience Through Creativity and Expression: The film showcases the therapeutic power of creativity. It encourages us to find our own 'heron' – be it art, music, or writing – as a way to express and process our experiences. This creative outlet not only aids personal growth but can also drive innovation and problem-solving in our work.

As we navigate the challenges of the modern world, "The Boy and the Heron" serves as a poignant reminder of the strength and resilience within us all. Let's take these lessons to heart and apply them in our personal and professional lives.
