Picture this: It's a bustling company event, filled with chatter and laughter. As introductions are made, my colleague proudly announces, "She's Brazilian." However, amidst the noise, the customer mishears and responds with admiration, "Oh! She's resilient?"
The moment hangs in the air, and then laughter erupts. It's a funny misunderstanding, but it resonates with me. After all, navigating the complexities of corporate America as a Brazilian does require a certain level of resilience. With a smile, acknowledging the truth behind the joke, "Well, to be Brazilian and thrive in this environment, resilience is a must."
And just like that, the #ResilientBrazilian is born – a lighthearted nickname that captures the essence of overcoming challenges with grace and determination.
But let's rewind a bit.
Growing up in Brazil, I witnessed firsthand the challenges and disparities that come with living in a country marked by poverty and economic inequality. It's not always easy to navigate a landscape where opportunities are scarce and obstacles seem insurmountable.
Yet, despite the odds stacked against us, Latin Americans, and Brazilians, in particular, possess a unique resilience – a strength born from adversity and nurtured by perseverance. We know how to weather the storms and emerge stronger on the other side.

Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago, and the #ResilientBrazilian nickname was officially born. It's more than just a catchy phrase; it's a testament to the indomitable spirit of a people who refuse to be defined by their circumstances.
But my story is just one of many. Across the globe, individuals from diverse backgrounds face their own set of challenges and triumphs. That's why initiatives like Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are so crucial in today's workplace.
ERGs provide a vibrant platform for employees to come together, share experiences, and champion diversity and inclusion. They ensure that our voices are not just heard, but listened to attentively, our perspectives are valued, and our differences are celebrated. These are just a few of the myriad reasons why I am actively involved in and continually recruit my colleagues to these groups: to engage with one another, to learn from each other, and to advocate for our collective interests.
And the data backs it up. According to a study by McKinsey & Company, companies with diverse workforces are 35% more likely to outperform their competitors. Diversity isn't just a buzzword; it's a business imperative.
So here's to the #ResilientBrazilian in all of us – to overcoming obstacles, breaking barriers, and making a difference. Let's continue to champion diversity, both in the workplace and beyond, because when we embrace our differences, we unleash our collective strength.
Join me in celebrating resilience, diversity, and the power of the human spirit. Together, we can build a brighter, more inclusive future for all. ??
