Talamo Topline v2.2: Digital Pharma East Edition

This week on “The Talamo Topline” marks the kickoff of one of my favorite conferences – Digital Pharma East right down the road in Philadelphia. After spending the last 10 years behind the firewall leading our CME division Physicians’ Education Resource, last year’s DPE conference was an exciting way for me to dive head-first back into the digital media side of things. I’ve been looking forward to this year’s 2023 meeting for months to share with new and old friends the way we have been pushing the envelope on data, content creation, and personalization. These meetings are tremendous opportunities for both old and new friends as true innovation these days happens through collaborations and partnerships.

If you are at DPE this week in Philadelphia, let me know and we can catch up! If not, find me on Calendly or send me a note and we will connect offline. Looking forward to it!

AI in Healthcare

  • STAT: Moving Beyond ChatGPT: How Generative AI is Inspiring Dreams of a Health Data Revolution: The world’s largest technology companies are racing to build generative AI into every corner of health and medicine. Microsoft has formed an alliance with the electronic health records vendor Epic to wire the technology into dozens of health software products. Google is infusing it into tools used by hospitals to collect and organize data on millions of patients. Not to be outdone, Amazon has unveiled a service to help build clinical note scribes, and is separately working to embed generative AI in drug research and development.
  • Health IT Analytics: Microsoft Collab to Build World’s Largest Pathology, Oncology Imaging AI: Microsoft and healthcare technology company Paige have launched a partnership to create the world’s largest image-based artificial intelligence (AI) models for digital pathology and oncology. The work aims to transform cancer diagnosis and patient care, building on existing innovations in the field by both companies.
  • On the Hill: MIT Technology Review: What to Know About Congress’s Inaugural AI Meeting: The US Congress is heading back into session, and they are hitting the ground running on AI. We’re going to be hearing a lot about various plans and positions on AI regulation in the coming weeks, kicking off with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s first AI Insight Forum on Wednesday.

Leadership

  • Forbes: In The AI Era, Elevating Human-Centered Leadership Has Never Been More Important: Over the last few months, an extraordinary thing has happened. From Google engineers declaring that AI algorithms have achieved consciousness, to claims that ChatGPT can pass the Turing test, AI tools have grown so sophisticated that they can seem almost human. That word — almost — is doing a lot of work, though. New generative AI models are dazzling, but they represent knowledge without heart or soul. An algorithm consumes data, finds patterns, and produces lifelike outputs, but ultimately there’s no ghost in the machine.
