Taking Stock of Brexit 7 years on

Taking Stock of Brexit 7 years on

I decided to write this article from the naive viewpoint of someone who does not live in Britain, or perhaps a visitor from another planet. Fresh eyes are always useful when examining complex affairs. ?I strongly urge you to watch the 17 minute video which has attracted huge acclaim, but if you can wait till the end, please read on.

In 2016, Britain voted to become an isolated country via a thing called Brexit.?The marginal 52:48 popular vote was pumped up by:

  1. Outlandish promises that we would fund our NHS healthcare system with the proceeds of Brexit. A whopping ï¿¡350 000 000 per week was promised to the people of Britain.
  2. Brexit ‘freedoms’ from EU laws, 98% of which Britain helped to make.
  3. The weaponisation of migrants ‘swarming’ into the UK, using the very same language used by the Nazis to justify the Holocaust, pertinent at this time as we remember the results of Hitler's demonisation of the Jewish people.
  4. Catchy slogans. In Britain we had "Take Back Control". In America it was "Build The Wall". These populist slogans proved to be empty promises.

It then took five years to leave our membership of the club we call the European Union, mostly because nobody in our Government could agree what Brexit meant.? The still cannot with members of the Tory party fighting like cats in a sack. Tory party leader Nigel Farage stated that the reasons that Brexit isn't working are that we don't have 'the right kind of Brexit' and that the Remoaners have somehow jinxed Brexit. Embedded in Nigel's phrase 'the right kind of Brexit' are at least 50 shades of freedom:

Some wanted total isolation with free market capitalism on steroids, a kind of ‘Singapore on Thames’.?

Others wished to retain all the benefits of trade and co-operation from Europe without any of the responsibilities of club membership.? The so-called 'cake and eat it model'.

Buried under the debate was a kind of faux nostalgia that workhouses, a return to a feudal system of control and so on might be better ways of controlling the masses.

The battle rages on between the various factions. Brexit has despatched four Prime Ministers in the process, with our fifth currently sitting in the departure lounge.?Ultimately, it seems that Brexit consumes all its offspring.

In the third year on from our departure from the EU, it is possible to see the beginnings of the realities of Brexit.?In this film, I have taken what could be described as a ‘Brexit Stock Take’.?This piece deals with the economic realities of Brexit.?Others in the series will deal with Social effects, Political futures, Legal outcomes, Environmental impacts and Technological effects.

Please take a look at the film and subscribe to our EU TUBE channel.?Our 'Brexit Take' is 17 minutes long but well worth your time as a case study in populism which is sweeping Brazil, the USA, India, Russia and several other places.?Paradoxically, the world needs collaborative leadership and joined up thinking to face climate change and the many other global issues we must address if we are to survive.?Instead, many think that ‘strong men’ are the answers to such problems.?We shall see who prevails. Our next film takes on the sociological aspects of Brexit and addresses topics such as immigration, social care, freedom etc.
