Taking stock after more than two decades in Recruitment

What a view! I definitely enjoy coming to the office to this ??

It's hard to believe I've been working as a Recruitment Consultant for over two decades. It feels like just yesterday I started out, so perhaps now is the perfect moment to reflect on how drastically the recruitment landscape has changed over the years.

Gone are the days of scanning classified ads and sending in paper CVs. Instead, we find ourselves in a digital marketplace where personal branding and online networking is key.

One significant change I've observed is the increasing focus on individual achievements and personal branding, rather than simply listing job responsibilities. Today, a standout candidate sets themselves apart by showcasing their unique contributions and accomplishments throughout their career. This shift underscores the importance of crafting a compelling narrative that highlights your value to potential employers.

Dedicated job boards and networking platforms, such as the ubiquitous LinkedIn, have also revolutionised the job search process.

I remember when we relied on our own databases and maybe a couple of online job boards for advertising and CV searches, but now candidates can directly engage to explore potential opportunities and expand their professional networks. In this digital age, maintaining a polished online presence, including an updated LinkedIn profile, is crucial in today's competitive job market.

Also, candidates considering a new job weigh up numerous factors. While salary is undoubtedly important, it's just one piece of the puzzle. Through my daily conversations with candidates all over the world, I've noticed the emphasis on aspects such as work-life balance, company values, opportunities for career advancement, and access to training and upskilling initiatives. These factors often play a pivotal role in the decision-making process.

Conversely, organisations are now judged not only on monetary compensation but also on what additional benefits they offer prospective employees. Flexible work arrangements, a supportive company culture, and robust professional development programs are among the key factors that can attract top talent in today's fiercely competitive landscape.

In my opinion, adaptability is key when starting your job search. Embrace digital tools and strategies to effectively position yourself in the market. Similarly, as an employer, it's crucial to remain attuned to the evolving preferences and priorities of potential candidates in order to attract and retain top talent.

The recruitment process has undergone profound changes during my two-decade career. Yet, amidst this rapid evolution, the fundamentals of showcasing your value and aligning with the right opportunities remain timeless. By embracing change and maintaining a strategic approach, both candidates and clients can thrive in today's job market.

You started when you were 15, right? Great Article, Bel. We're lucky to have had you as part of the team for over 15 year :)
