Taking Self-Defense into Your Own Hands: The Rising Concern Over Crime and Personal Protection

Recent surveys reveal that concerns over violent crime are rising sharply among Americans.

It is evident that a large number of individuals are basing their self-defense assessments on personal experiences and observations.

A survey conducted by LendingTree found that nearly a quarter of Americans (23%) reported either experiencing or knowing a neighbor who had experienced a break-in.

The survey also revealed that nearly half of the respondents (46%) believe their local government and police are not doing enough to combat violent and property crimes. As a result, more Americans are taking proactive steps to safeguard their homes and families. In the past year alone, 29% of individuals upgraded their home security systems, with another 25% planning to do the same in the near future.

The heightened concern over safety is also driving other behavioral changes. Roughly 26% of Americans, especially among Gen Z (49%) and urban residents (39%), have considered relocating due to crime concerns.

It won't come as a surprise for readers here, but the overwhelming majority of people own firearms for self-defense. Not hunting. Not target shooting. But for self-defense in response to the growing threats of crime and increased lawlessness as we continue to see cultural, social, and political fracturing.

Researchers in the Journal Injury Prevention conducted a survey between May and June 2023, studying a nationally representative sample of nearly 2,500 American adults who reported owning guns.

The survey found that 79% of gun owners cited personal protection as their primary reason for owning firearms.

The continuing surge in first-time gun ownership spans across various demographics.

The growing trend of self-defense, whether through enhancing home security systems or purchasing firearms, reflects a broader shift in mindset. People are recognizing that their self-defense is ultimately their own responsibility. The belief that government or law enforcement can always be there to protect them is waning.

For numerous individuals, this awareness pertains not just to criminal activities but also extends to a more general discontent with the government's effectiveness in tackling other significant matters. As citizen's faith in governmental remedies and trust in institutions wanes, the inclination towards self-reliance increases, especially in terms of security and individual safety.

The rise in self-defense measures—whether through firearms or security systems—marks a shift towards taking control over one’s own security. More and more Americans are waking up to the reality that when it comes to protecting themselves and their loved ones, they are their own first line of defense.

In today’s world, being prepared and vigilant has never been more important.
