Taking Risks
The pendulum has swung a long way since the days when children roamed between after school and sunset, home in time for dinner. Play time is now a primarily a supervised activity in a controlled environment, within a playground, park or back yard. Schools are wanting to reintroduce self-directed play and risk taking that helps students to gain the benefits that can only come from such activities.
A good playground design strikes the balance between adventure and safety. Students need to not be able to master everything first go. A new playground may seem a bit daunting to students and staff. Perhaps a student may need to strive all year to reach a certain stage of reach, as the mind and body grow together.
