Taking Purpose into the Community

Community outreach is an important part of our programs here at Prairie Elder Care.  We love to bring community members into our homes and get our elders out into the community.  One of the amazing ways were are getting out into the community is our Grandparents Program.

Twice a month one or two of our elders volunteers in a local preschool classroom.  They help with activities and just bring lots of love.  As you can see here, this is a joy for both our elders and the preschoolers!

Our goal is to bring a sense of purpose to our elders while introducing the preschoolers to people living with dementia.  What a win-win!  This is just one of the ways were are working to reduce the stigma of dementia while just making people feel good!!!

One of the reasons dementia can be such a devastating diagnosis is the stigma.  As a culture, commonly, people don't know how to handle someone who is changing cognitively.  Within our mission of bringing Community, Connection and Control back into the lives of people living with dementia and their loved ones we include education because the more people know about dementia and how to interact with those living with it, the more accepting they will be.  The less afraid they will be.  Call 913-257-5425 for more information on our educational programming.
