Taking Ownership
G’day Guys, I’ve been reading a lot lately regarding taking ownership and I mean extreme ownership.
No more excuses or putting failures down to a certain situation or set of circumstances.
Recently I stumbled across a book that is full of wisdom on the subject, the book was written by two, ex-NAVY SEAL Commanders who re-wrote the leadership program which is still in place today. Jocko Willink (one of the authors) is a no bullshit kind of character, as you can imagine. He wakes up at 4.30am everyday (even takes a photo of his watch and posts it to social media to keep himself accountable). Look him up, he’s a beast ha!!
The principals that are critical to a SEAL teams’ success on the battlefield are directly applicable to success in any organisation, business and life in general.
You have probably witnessed yourself, so many times when something goes wrong within a business environment, you get fingers pointed left right and centre, no one takes accountability and there are always a million bullshit excuses as to why this has happened.
Ownership needs to be imbedded into organisations and businesses, this is very much a personal mind-set that needs to begin at the top and filter through the whole organisation. Did you hear that?? From the top!!
When things go wrong or someone resigns, the majority of the time you will hear business owners and senior team members saying "oh we gave them an extra 10K, I just upgraded their vehicle, they just weren't performing, they didn't get it." Excuses!!!!
Taking extreme ownership for your own actions and the success or failures of your team is imperative if you want to become a strong and respected leader. No matter what, it all starts and finishes with you.
Once your team notices that you take full ownership and responsibility of your actions and the outcomes of the entire team, then you will start to notice a change in their mindset which leads to a positive, pro-active and empowered team.
If you can create a culture where everyone takes ownership of their role, their actions, their emotions, then you will inevitably succeed.
I’ve been practising this lately myself and it works wonders, when you get rid of the excuses you tell yourself, it’s amazing what can be achieved.
From promising startups to Fortune 500 companies, the authors have helped scores of clients across a broad range of industries build their own high-performance teams and dominate their battlefields.
Do yourself a favour and go out and grab a copy of the book “Extreme Ownership – How U.S Navy Seals Lead and Win” it shows you how to directly apply their lessons learnt, to yourself or your business.
Over and out….
