Taking Ownership Part II

Taking Ownership Part II

Last week, I wrote about the concept of taking ownership, inspired by a TED talk by Jocko Willink. If you missed it, here's a link to last week's post: LINK

My biggest takeaway is how he made such a profound point at the end of his talk that teams that take 100% responsibility for their role in any outcome are the teams that get their problems solved.

A more common occurrence in our everyday lives when things don't go perfectly is a lot of finger-pointing. We see this in politics regularly, and we often see it from business leaders during scandals.

At the very end of his talk, when he is urging his audience to take ownership, he says it like this:

"Take ownership of your job, of your team, of your future, and take ownership of your life! And Lead! Lead yourself, your team, and the people in your life; lead them all to victory!"

I struggled not to get caught up in his emotions during this talk. This talk has me asking myself: where do I need to take more responsibility in my life, relationships, and business? I can do a better job of leading myself and how I show up daily. At times, I struggle when things aren't going well instead of looking at the situation objectively and figuring out what I can do to achieve a better outcome. This is a challenge that I am going to take on myself. I am challenging myself to lead myself at a much higher level.

For the team here at Zenith, perhaps this is an excellent opportunity to ask ourselves the same question. Because as a team, if we all take 100% responsibility for the outcome, we can do anything, solve any problem, and overcome any challenge.

One of our core values is?Perform with Excellence; within that value, we talk about owning our mistakes and learning from them. Perhaps we ought to consider adding a core value about taking ownership. It could help us to focus even more on important topics. ?It would also make the world a much better place. The best thing a leader can do is lead by example, and with a team of people leading themselves at a higher level, we could create a movement that could impact the world.

Will you join me?

Quote of the week:

“Good leaders don't make excuses. Instead, they figure out a way to get things done.”

Jocko Willink
