Taking my Linkedin content shares to the next level - Proximity Sharing (PhyWeb)
This is a follow up to my last post - MARP (Mobile Augmented Reality Physical) Business Cards
Behold! My hairy arm!!!
Look closer! I now wear a "Flash" watch because I am a huge fan of The Flash (Comics and TV show - not yet sold on Zach Snyder's movie Flash yet).
Of course, it is an Eddystone beacon attached to a wristband. The URL and messages are dynamic - tied to a Chrome Extension which I developed to share online content to Linkedin and my MARP business card.
I have calibrated the range to 20 metres. If you happen to be within 20 metres of me and have Chrome or Opera Labs with Physical Web turned on, you can pick up my latest share.
Every time a user taps on the notification, my MARP card's web app gets updated (ref. Proximity Views).
And this is what the P in MARP (Mobile Augmented Reality Physical) stands for - Physical (as in Physical Web).
With 3200+ followers and contacts on Linkedin, it was time to take my online content to the next level. Proximity sharing/broadcasting is the new cool.
I am currently working (more like playing) on a GitHub beacon for fun - which would show my last commit + code preview snippet + last Slack group and channel for which I left a message. This could be useful in an office environment where devs do no need to be disturbed. Also, I could tie this to IFTTT on the Google Hub. This could be fun!!! I just need to make better and cooler 3D printed casings for my beacons. Shapeways, here I come!
- Turn on your Bluetooth.
- Turn on Physical Web in Chrome (or Opera Labs) - under Privacy Settings.
- If you are on iOS, install Chrome, turn on your bluetooth, and go to your Today Screen widget thingy and enable Physical Web.
Looking forward to you experiencing a close encounter of the proximity-kind.
