Taking Credit for Others' Work

Taking Credit for Others' Work

When leaders snatch the limelight for successes achieved by their teams, the repercussions extend far beyond a stolen "well done." It's a gut punch to the team's morale; it erodes trust, damages enthusiasm, and typically hinders high performance. The leader's integrity becomes suspect, as their honesty and championing of the team are now questionable.

Imagine pouring your heart and soul into a project, only to see your leader accept the praise you deserve—motivation plummets, replaced by resentment and a sense of being disconnected. The drive to innovate disappears, replaced by a cynical "what's the point?" attitude.

A leader who hoards credit demonstrates a disregard for the team's contributions. It undermines open communication and the sharing of information, which is the lifeblood of collaboration. Ideas are kept under wraps, and the teamwork that sparks breakthroughs dwindles.

Retention becomes a problem because undervalued employees seek opportunities elsewhere, where their efforts are recognised and contributions are valued. The knowledge and experience they take with them leave a gap, limiting the leader's ability to achieve.

Leaders who bask in borrowed glory may enjoy a fleeting ego boost, but the long-term damage outweighs any temporary gain. True leadership means empowering teams, recognising their worth, and sharing the credit. When the spotlight shines on the entire team, not just the leader, the warmth illuminates a path to collective success, built on trust and a shared sense of accomplishment.

So, leaders, remember that the brightest light isn't always yours. It's the combined glow of a team that is trusted, recognised, and valued. And that's the light that takes everyone to genuine, sustainable victory.
