Taking Charge of Your Career

Taking Charge of Your Career

Last week, I released the 10th episode of my conversation series, ' Leading with Purpose.' This series was inspired by my everyday coaching conversations.? ?

I spoke to one leader every week for 10 weeks and picked their brains on some of these challenges. One of my questions to them was - how can mid-career professionals take charge of their careers??

Almost everyone emphasized clarity - knowing yourself, what you want, what inspires you, where you stand, being passionate about your work, continuous learning, embracing discomfort, taking risks, and being resilient.???

Below are 10 additional valuable pointers given by these leaders -??

  1. Look to create an impact instead of seeking instant gratification. Decorative/titular promotions are not good for the long-term health of your career.
  2. Take ownership. Consider the purpose of the exercise, when you are asked to do something and work to serve the purpose.
  3. Don't let your existing skill set define you. Have the courage and confidence to start afresh and figure things out. Setbacks are inevitable. Learn from them and move forward. Focus on what is in your control. Give your best to whatever you may be doing.
  4. Be solution-oriented and consultative.
  5. Know your stakeholders, supporters, and sponsors.
  6. Invest in relationships.
  7. Build your visibility and influence. Create a compelling personal brand.
  8. Advocate for yourself. Don't wait to be asked.
  9. Create support systems at work and home.
  10. Engage a coach to help you navigate the journey, stay honest and accountable to yourself, and take risks.

My heartfelt thanks to Vikas Madaan , Udit Pahwa , Sandeep Kumar , Mamta Talwar (PgMP)? Ravi Khokhar , Sajita Thomas (She/Her/Hers) , Sudhir Dasamantharao , Kriti Makhija , Seetha Cristian , and Poornima Garg for their valuable time and wisdom. I also learned a lot in the process!?
