Taking a break

I am writing this entry as I am taking a short weekend break away from work and family, to spend some time alone with a good friend.
As I dedicate to write a topic on design innovation every month for this year, I tend to think about how we can be effective at work by adopting a set of mindsets and methods around designing an experience innovatively.
This snippet, however, is dedicated to the idea of a break. The pie in the sky is to see work as a constant and consistent engine. And while it may seem counterintuitive to have a break in order to be productive, the reality to pause and reflect helps with a full refreshing of the mind so as to create better and more original work. Take Stefan Sagmeister design sabbath as an example where he takes a year off on the 7th year by closing his studio to recharge. Yet small frequent breaks are equally essential to fill up the creative tank. And so, after some intense work, I’ll be switching off the laptop and enjoy the moment.

4 年Awesome topic! I tried last year and went on a personal offsite. I spent 2 days in my hotel in Saigon and worked out what I gotta do for work and life and the balance. I think more work was planned and only some aspects of life was considered. For the life aspect, On a daily basis, a good night sleep is important and that was what I decided to work on and did it. Huge positive impact. Recently (late Jan/early feb), I went through a voluntary 14-day stay-home (aka self quarantine) it turned out to be way harder than I thought it would be. Mental health is very important. It helps us to stay focused and be more creative.
