Taking architecture to the air waves!

Consider this, a weekly radio program about architecture that connects with a broad public, has loyal followers and is fascinating! Frances Anderton is host of KCRW’s DnA: Design and Architecture, A thoughtful look at architecture and design in the modern age, with a focus on her adopted city of Los Angeles. Since 2002 DnA  celebrates LA’s extensive design and architecture and makes a case for why they are important to the well-being of the region.

In an interview in Curbed, Anderton says: "I learned they (architects) had less power than I’d been taught in architecture school! But I also learned the input of designers did not get enough respect from policymakers and the general public and that without strong pressure from the design community, many policy makers and city-builders and journalists would ignore the useful role of design and designers altogether."

Once again, the main challenges are: engagement between architects and the public; a common and understood vocabulary to permit dialog; and a conviction that architecture and design are fundamental, useful, and directly contribute to the livability of our cities. It's refreshing that a rather simple, straightforward, but creative use of "old" technology can do so much good. Thanks, Frances, for your years hosting the program and your example!
