It takes a village...to build a mega project

Michael Jordan said it best. “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships.”

Without a doubt, I’ve had the privilege to play with the best team in LNG Canada.

Should our Joint Venture Participants (JVPs) make a final investment decision to build a plant to liquefy natural gas for export—which I hope will happen later in 2018—the LNG Canada project will be the largest energy or infrastructure investment project ever built in Canada. It will be a project of national significance that opens up a new industry and new markets for Canadian natural gas.

Today, Canada’s top 100 infrastructure projects together account for $199 billion. The two largest of these, the Bruce Power and Darlington nuclear refurbishment projects in Ontario, were valued at $13 billion and $12.8 billion respectively.

LNG Canada’s estimate for construction of the project along the full value chain - upstream gas development, the CGL pipeline, the two train LNG plant, the port in Kitimat, and LNG ships is closer to $40 billion - placing us in a mega-project category of one.And we could not have done this on our own. Here’s just a sample of who has been helping us get this far.

Safety during Construction

WorkSafeBC is helping us to live up to our aspiration of being the Safest Project on Earth.

Bringing natural gas to Kitimat

TransCanada Pipeline—with its track-record for safe, stable gas transmission networks— will build the 670-km Coastal GasLink pipeline.

Green Power

BC Hydro is providing green power to help us achieve among the lowest carbon emissions of any LNG plant operating in the world today.

Community Support

Rio Tinto provided land for our project and the District of Kitimat has welcomed us with open arms.

Seaspan’s joint venture with Haisla, HaiSea, could competitively power our escort and harbor tugs, and demonstrates what can happen when industry and First Nations work closely together.

Environmental Permits

The regulators Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, BC's Environmental Assessment Office, Oil and Gas Commission and National Energy Board have held our project to the highest standards to ensure the safe export and transport of natural gas in its liquid form.

Construction

In 2016, when our JVPs delayed the project due to prevailing market forces, we seized the opportunity to go back to market to identify an Engineering, Procurement and Construction partner. We recently awarded the team of JGC and Fluor that contract (pending FID).

Workforce

Industry Training Authority, BC Construction Association, Independent Contractors and Business Association, and the trade unions that represent skilled workers across British Columbia will help us build the project with British Columbian and Canadian labour.

Technology

We couldn’t have achieved a project that ranks among the lowest CO2 emissions without GE, and the use of its high-efficient gas turbines to drive the liquefaction process.

Together, we have set the bar for mega-project delivery including new, innovative ways to contribute to the natural gas sector, while generating significant commercial value for our partners.

We have demonstrated how an LNG project can cut its CO2 intensity in half, share benefits with First Nations and host communities, differentiate itself through workforce development programs and become the Project of Choice for governments.

To everyone who’s making this mega project a reality, thank you.

Andy, I had the pleasure of working with your team on LNG Canada as part of the CFSW joint venture. It was a tremendous experience that I rate as one of the highlights of my career. My introductory words to the Implementation Contractors at our Market Intelligence Workshop in Calgary compared the engineering, construction and successful startup of Canada’s first LNG facility to the challenge of building the railway across Canada. Canadians have the smarts, ingenuity, work ethic and commitment to make the project successful. I wish you and your team all the best in obtaining a positive FID in 2018. Let’s get this built!
