It Takes a Village to Go Tiny....

Jeff, Matilda and I live in fairly small mountain town, called Placerville, aka “Old Hangtown” (called so for obvious reasons). Gold was first discovered not too far from here. Placerville is about 11,000 people strong and has a large tourist pull. I’ve lived around here for about 10 years now and Jeff more recently since we were married. Even though I have been living and working here for a substantial amount of time, I have never felt like I was truly a member of this community, until recently.

I am pleased to say that over the last 2 years while building this tiny house, I have finally discovered what it means to be part of this town’s community. I’ve never met so many people who were genuinely interested in what Jeff and I were trying to accomplish. There have been many hurdles as previously mentioned, but with support we seem to make it through. I see why people say “I wish I could do that,” but never follow through. It’s a lot of hard work.

I would like to take this opportunity to mention a few of the helping hands here: Justin the welder, who has been absolutely phenomenal. Mike at the wheel shop who held our hand while trying to find our specialty tires. My workplace for letting us use space to park and construct the house on site. Jeff’s Cousin, Matt who installed our heating and air system. Jeff’s life long friends Rich and Ed, who helped with electrical and plumbing. All the guys and gals at Home Depot. Officer Frizzell with CHP for helping with our DMV woes and my Boss who provided forklift assistance and more. There were more people who got involved and helped out, especially our families! We could have done none of this without the offer of help from Todd and Tamera Sturgis (Jeff’s Brother and Sister-in-Law) who will be transporting our tiny house to Spur this July. You might recognize Todd and Tamera when we roll into town. They were on A&E’s Shipping Wars.

It’s ironic that I finally feel part of this community and we are preparing to spend our lives somewhere else, but it gives me hope and I look forward to joining the Dickens County community. We have already had a wealth of support and I am looking forward to meeting new friends face to face. We owe a big thank you to the entire City of Spur! City Hall has been amazing to us. Laura, John & Chris have been so patient with me. Mayor Jones has been very helpful and knowledgeable. We have been contracting with Jim Worsham for work on our property along with the Hamilton family who has been maintaining our lots. We have also had a warm welcome from Charlotte Sprayberry and her husband on Facebook. Thanks to Jose at Chastain’s for dealing with my weird order. John at AEP has been quick to help and the whole team at CapRock was very professional and welcoming. And last, but not least THANK YOU to Kay Ellington and The Texas Spur for giving Jeff and me this platform to introduce ourselves. If I forgot someone, I am very sorry. Everyone has been so welcoming to outsiders like ourselves. We look forward to making our home and our lives part of The Spur Community
