It takes Courage to consider making a change when you are currently more successful than you have ever been.
Why consider making a career change when you are doing so well? Why consider making a move when you are making more money now than you have ever made? The easy answer is you shouldn't. Do not answer the phone, ignore the invitation to connect with someone, delete the email when you see it is about an opportunity. The easy way is almost always a temporary gain and a short sighted win. So, why do it? Why consider a change?
If you want to make a change solely to make more money, who can blame you? Athletes do it all the time. Their contract is up, they have the right to move on. Often times they excelled even more in the final year of their contract. They sign for more money than if they were to stay put. Many criticize them for leaving their team simply for financial gain. Most feel they abandoned their team and stop cheering for them, they no longer hope they succeed and want them to fail. But why?
To the fan it is obvious, they took the money and ran, they abandoned their team. But did they? Is that what happened? 99.9% of us will never know the truth. Do we deserve to know why? Do they owe us an explanation? After all, we cheered for them for 3 or 4 years, many bought their jerseys. There are even those that name their children after them. So how dare they leave for more money? We know it is all about being greedy. We are sure it is solely for the money. We on the outside think we know why and deserve an answer. The simple truth is we have no clue why they signed elsewhere and we deserve no explanation.
So you may be thinking, exactly how does that show Courage? On the surface, it doesn't at all. So why does it take Courage to make a change when things are going spectacularly? We tend not to like change unless we are the ones creating the change. So is it Courageous to make a change when things are going better than ever? I believe it does.
It takes a lot of Courage to make a change when life is good, why change what is already a good thing? A great thing? There is no better time to look yourself in the mirror and examine your heart than when you are making more money than you have ever made? The safe thing is not to answer the phone, ignore the LinkedIn request, and delete the email or text message.
But the Courageous will consider a change because it isn't only about making more money. Being successful is not about making a lot of money, it is making a positive difference in just one life other than your own each and every day. Be COURAGEOUS, make a change.
