"It takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!"

Now I have your attention the quote above is from Alice in Wonderland, this piece of advice relates to a glass half-empty and a glass half-full situation. Where there is a case for an existential crisis in that we all must work harder without making any real progress, or it's a motivational one in that it offers the solution that will get us to meaningful progress.

Over the last few weeks, I have been reading articles about the number of jobs losses across the world, and seeing how furloughing does not keep people in jobs, I have been reading with disbelief some transcripts from government leaders and seeing how they are in self denial about the outcome of their inadequate policies and ineptitude at planning to get their economies back to some level of normalcy with a short term, mid term and long range plan.

Show me one government who has clearly laid out a minimum of a 24 month roadmap to recovery including a scenario for a wave 2 of covid-19? Show me a government plan that lays out how they will deal with the debt from the printing of money and the related risk of hyper inflation?

For medium and large businesses in hospitality from what I am reading, and hearing most seem to be going down the route of cutting jobs to zero baseline with no clear strategy other than stemming loss risks with a hope it won't be as bad as they think it could be.

A little like Alice It is like governments have led us all down the rabbit hole while they are waiting for the dust to settle. Meanwhile all of us people down the rabbit hole are in some dream state and are left wondering what will happen with our livelihoods and witnessing an epic amount of business closures and job losses at the same. It's very surreal.

Please do not deceive yourself these are not just numbers, these are real people and real lives behind the business closures and job loss numbers. No one should be treating these numbers as simply nothing especially because they are not impacting you right now, as the consequence of inaction by leaders and governments will mean you are likely to become one of the number of people in the future who may lose their job or face a business closure if we end up going down the road towards a global recession / depression.

We really are in a situation where we all need to support each other and get through this together ideally lobbying governments and engaging the smartest minds to work together to find the best solutions and set a global economic recovery blue print that is shared with us all in a transparent way.

I simply cannot believe how badly governments appear to be dealing with the Covid-19 situation. I am utterly confused as to why many business leaders appear to have siloed themselves and their companies and allowing this monumental breakdown and collapse of hotels, restaurants and bars on a scale like we have never seen before. Read the transcript from trump meeting restaurant leaders it is bewildering to say the least.

We need business leaders to become more action oriented and far more visible, progressive, with agility and have the ability to make real-time decisions that are anchored in business potential which is forward thinking and supported with an authentic propensity for genuine human connection in terms of the workforce and customers.

Our business leaders must have a mindset for harmonising financials, the planet and with a culture for success and growth through helping people find the best version of themselves while creating a new commercially sustainable path towards financial success in this post lockdown world.

Looking at the world right now I believe we ALL should have a bias for positive action not battening down the hatches and waiting for the storm to pass. Believe me the damage from this storm will be significant, if we do not act together now, at the very least it will leave the next generation paying back the debts we incurred for decades to come.

As with all negatives there will be a positive side of course and for sure there will be some winners as we are heading into a negative global financial situation, and this will be the already super wealthy and rich who are on the current 1% global rich list, and these people already own over 50% of the planets wealth. I found this article and it shows that income inequality has worsened now when compared to 1975.

I am wondering what can I do to break the silence and get some commitments? How can I get people to join together to take some positive direct action that will help us get out of the rabbit hole. Our governments and business leaders must work together and lay out some clear plans and contingencies for getting the planet working and recovering from the impact of covid-19 especially for the hospitality industry as this has been one of the hardest hit and of course is my love and passion.

I am not being politically biased, all I care about is that I want to see people stop losing their jobs on the scale that it is, I have never seen before such losses before. I am seeing the closure of small businesses on a level I am finding difficult to accept and comprehend.

In America alone we should all expect 7.5 Million businesses to close, globally I cannot find the number but i am sure it will be astronomical. Remember all businesses support communities and this will have a domino effect at every level of a city , town or village Community.

I am interested to see how other people are seeing the world right now too?

Please feel free to share your thoughts and suggest how we can do something to make a difference, how can we get governments and business leaders to make timely, impactful clear plans to move the world forward in the commercial sense with safety at the core, to what could be a new and exciting era or do we all simply wait and see what happens to us?

Thank you for reading

Economists are really concerned about incentives. And when you have a kitchen-sink approach, you don’t think a lot about incentives in doing that kind of legislation.? And that could be where the rubber meets the road. Are we changing behavior in unexpected ways by the way we are trying to stimulate the economy in a time of crisis?
