Takeout troubles

From The Silhouette and Model Cafe to Roxy’s Grilled Cheese and Lulu’s, Allston businesses traditionally have relied on a mix of customers — from college students and twenty-somethings, as well as longtime residents — to stay busy.

Two main factors, from higher rent to Uber Eats, has turned tradition on its head.

Just as Boston's downtown businesses are wondering where the commuters are, Allston restaurant owners are wondering where their foot traffic has gone.

While retail stores in Allston are seeing sales near or exceeding pre-pandemic rates, according to Alex Cornacchini, executive director of the small-business advocacy group Allston Village Main Streets , restaurants and bars haven’t seen the same success.

“During the pandemic, people grew accustomed to living a certain way: staying in and ordering food for delivery,” Cornacchini said. “That’s not changing.”

Find out more about the changing habits and demographics imperiling Allston restaurants in the third installment of the BBJ’s On Main Street series focusing on small businesses in Boston neighborhoods.

Mr. Bancel goes to Washington

In a hearing Wednesday morning before U.S. senators, the chief executive of Moderna Inc. defended the company's decision to increase the cost of its Covid-19 vaccine four-fold.

CEO Stephane Bancel, who voluntarily agreed to testify on behalf of the Cambridge drugmaker was also grilled on his company's profits, stock buybacks and distribution strategy as Covid vaccines move into an endemic market. Here’s more about what he said.

And speaking of profits, Bancel? cashed in on a $393 million stock option last year. He says he's donated the entirety of after-tax proceeds — totaling around $176 million — to charities, but it's not clear how all of that money has been allocated. Here’s what we know about where it went.
