Takeoff into the future: Buckle up for a data-powered revolution in aviation apps!

Data is the jet fuel supercharging industries all around us, from healthcare to finance, commerce, and even transportation. So how’s that looking in one sector that we all have a vested interest in: aviation? With data-driven operations, airports are getting a turbo boost, revolutionizing the way we fly!

Spicing up the passenger experience with data-driven operations

Ever dreamt of bypassing long queues, tedious paperwork, and still getting a top-notch airport experience? Thanks to data-driven technology, that's no longer just a fantasy. We're seeing a beautiful mashup of biometrics, artificial intelligence, and digital identification working together like a well-oiled machine, promising passengers a smoother, snappier, and more enjoyable journey.

Imagine this: airports managing resources in a perfectly timed way to handle peaks in passenger numbers. The result? Truly satisfied passengers and an airport experience that hits all the right bases.

But how can this be achieved? In a recent article for the Passenger Terminal World, Thales outlined its vision of an airport experience that combines its own solutions for Biometrics, AI and Digital ID to improve the time spent. In reducing wait times, queuing and frustrating bureaucracy, passengers can get to the shops, restaurants and lounges a lot faster! (1) While Aerocloud has the means of adapting work schedules to coincide with peak passenger numbers for a better experience at every step of the way. (2)

And it’s working! A recent study by Airport Dimensions found that there's a surge in overall passenger satisfaction with the airport experience. The study, which surveyed over 6,000 travelers, found that 62% of respondents considered the airport an important and enjoyable part of their journey, up 2% from 2019. Additionally, the percentage of dissatisfied airport travelers decreased from 14% to 12%, indicating that despite reduced travel, those who are traveling are having a better experience.?(3)

That's the sweet sound of data-driven success!

Supercharging airport security with data-driven technologies

When it comes to security, airports are adopting data-driven technologies faster than you can say "safe travels". The introduction of facial recognition and other advanced systems are giving a new definition to airport security, transforming it from a dreary necessity into a breeze. Of course it’s not all plain sailing, with questions raised about inherent biases and the security of the data collected. (4) But it does mean that the complete full-body pat down is a thing of the past replaced with a more targeted approach. It also means that objects that previously needed to be scanned separately, can be kept in passenger luggage as they pass through security checkpoints.?

But that's not all! AI has snuck into the security scene too, with automated threat recognition (ATR) playing the starring role. It's like having a superhero sidekick, constantly scanning and identifying threats, showing where contraband can be kept hidden, so you can just stroll through security without breaking a sweat.

Charting a greener course in the aviation industry

As we all make efforts to include sustainable practices, the aviation industry is adapting too. Through the magic of data analysis, airports are stepping up their eco-game. They're optimizing everything from inventory management to fuel consumption, doing their part in the green revolution.

What does this mean in real concrete terms? Data can help sketch out the best paths for utility vehicles to follow or help reduce aircraft wait times, ensure that the least amount of fuel is utilized as necessary. (5)

It’s clear that with the power of data, airports will keep ground fleets efficient, waste less fuel, and ultimately leave a smaller carbon footprint. Airport will be helping tackle climate change, thanks to techniques hidden within the heart of airport operations.
