Now this topic will inevitably bring up a lot of controversy as many people will have differing views on when to wear a poppy, how long to wear it, and why you should be wearing one.
Many individuals will argue that to maintain a certain level of etiquette and solidarity that it should be worn around to or as close to the date of Remembrance day; which this year was the 8th of November and always falls on a Sunday. It was known that the Royal British Legion appeal began around late October of this year where our home nation would pay tributes to those who fought on the front lines of our country through displays of poppies, broadcasted television programmes and a 2 minute silence to commemorate their bravery.
However what gets me is regardless of how early or late you decide to wear one or show your signs of respect... It just seems to go out of fashion and I do find that a tad disrespectful. After a day or two depending on the individual of Remembrance Day Its not like Christmas or Valentines Day where you can just write these days off as a moment of celebration and just forget about it as the days pass by.
A day of remembrance in anything in life is to signify remembering events and/or people. I would say it relates more to sensitive subjects such as death and bravery than something celebratory such as financial, career, or sexual prosperity. It is a time to reflect and to commemorate those who aren't as fortunate as we are today; whether they have died fighting or they have been left with a physical or mental impairment which affects their quality of life today. It is like having someone close to you pass away. You wouldn't just forget about their graves and them as a person because its going out of fashion. It will leave a strong sense of emotion within you for many months on end. It will play on your mind that maybe life without them will never be the same and you will instinctively keep thinking about them in the back of your mind.
So if you do read this and you still have your poppy like I do... Put it back on. Ive been wearing mine since the 1st of November which will spark up some controversy. But.. At least I am still wearing mine. Even if it is only till the end of this month where we begin to transition into more positive seasons such as Christmas and New year. Wear that poppy with pride and take it with you to your homes, to your workplaces, and to the boozer where you can have a drink or two for them. Symbolise it as a representation of those soldiers close to your very own hearts.
