Wondering how the local economy will look this year?

The threat of a recession dominated the conversation about the Sacramento economy last year, Emily Hamann reports in this week's cover story.

Heading into 2024, those fears don’t loom quite as large, and although Sacramento still has some significant pain points, the new year could see the economy slowing down instead of dropping off.

Fast-growing Clutch moves into Rancho Cordova HQ

The fastest-growing company in the Sacramento area is moving into its own office in the City of Rancho Cordova , and its founders are launching two new ventures from the space as well.

“Clutch has put down roots in Rancho Cordova,” Clutch CEO Rachel Zillner told the Business Journal.

The business consulting firm announced Thursday it is moving into a 78,000-square-foot?building that was previously part of VSP Vision 's corporate headquarters at 3249 Quality Drive. Read more


Goldfield's owners double down on investment in Roseville

The group behind the Goldfield Trading Post bar and music venue at 238 Vernon St. in downtown Roseville has bought the building, records show.

"So far, in our first two years of business, the Goldfield Trading Post location in Roseville has been successful and we feel strongly that business will only improve in the coming years," said Bret Bair, a member of that group, in an email. "Now that the venue is becoming known with all the?booking agents who determine where the acts play, we feel the number of concerts we produce should increase in the near future."

Two retailers plan local closures

Reporter Jacob Abbott covered two upcoming closures on the local retail scene.

First: Banana Republic plans to close its store in the Westfield Galleria at Roseville later this month. The retailer has operated a location inside the Galleria for over a decade. Banana Republic also has local stores in Arden Fair and the Folsom Premium Outlets. Read more

Also: National furniture retailer Scandinavian Designs is planning to close its Fair Oaks store in the coming months. The company's other local sites are in Rocklin and Elk Grove. Read more


Local radio employees file to join union

The broadcast employees of CapRadio and North State Public Radio are seeking union representation at a time when the stations are struggling with the financial strains lingering from the pandemic and some now-questionable management decisions.

The employees have filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board seeking union representation and a hearing over unionization, along with a request for a mail-in ballot.

“This is something they have been seeking for quite a while,” said Carrie Biggs-Adams, president of the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians - Communications Workers of America, Local 51, based in San Francisco.
