Ben Vautier works with idiosyncrasies of meaning as his materials. His limited edition work includes two elements: a sign and a clock. The clock does what all clocks do, it moves forward, each tick and tock a measure of value. The sign states unequivocally TAKE YOUR TIME, but what does that mean? To take one’s time is to ignore the necessity of workmanlike effort, to exist at an acceptable degree of motion. But he may also mean, Choose your time. Make your mark.
