Take a walk in the footsteps of champions! Discover the Secrets of the Mosopisiek People
At Matoke Tours DMC, we support sustainable tourism that empowers local communities and preserves unique heritage by choosing well-run community-based tourism activities across Uganda and Rwanda. We have some exciting ideas to share with our partners! The Mengia Village Tour in eastern Uganda is one example.
In the remote highlands of Kween District of eastern Uganda is a pristine piece of culture, home to the Mosopisiek people who lived in the Mount Elgon rainforest as hunter-gatherers until just thirty years ago. The high altitude-loving Mosopisiek carry the genes of running champions such as Cheptegei, Chemutai, Kiplimo, Kiprotich, and Kiplangat who have made Uganda famous in competitions around the world.
Learn about the healthy lifestyle of the Mosopisiek during this half-day walk through Mengia village – but don’t worry, we won’t make you run it.??
Take in the incredible scenery of Mengia waterfall while you learn all about local culture through indigenous plants and medicines. Eat a healthy lunch in a local restaurant.
This tour has been developed by Home of Friends Guesthouse one of our Adventure Tourism Uganda consortium partners. The Mengia Village Tour was specifically designed for Matoke Tours and other tour operators whose clients don’t always have time for Home of Friends’ flagship activity: the Mosopisiek Trail.
