Take time to give back

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a volunteer is defined as “a person who does something, especially helping other people, willingly and without being forced or paid to do it.”??In today’s fast pace, it takes effort to provide time toward helping others, particularly without any monetary compensation being provided.??Why then is it important to volunteer???

Afterall, there is a philosophy that you “have to make it” on your own.??That you can’t rely on others.??This way of thinking is particularly flawed.? All of us rely on others and it takes all of us to make a community thrive.

As part of a community, there will always be a need whether due to a natural disaster, or a series of unfortunate events, or sometimes poor planning.??People tend to presume they will never end up in a situation where they need help from other people, yet the reality is at some point, we have all needed help from other people.???The reality is no matter what your age, there have already been hundreds and possibly thousands of people who have helped you along the way.???You didn’t arrive where you are solely on your own.??

Of course, you have family and friends who you tend to rely on, but what about the people in your community who you don’t know or who may not know you.??Are you willing to help them and are they willing to help you???

The answer to why it is important to volunteer your time, money or effort is two-fold.??First it can leave a lasting positive impact on another person or group, and secondly, it can bring a real peace of mind to yourself if you are giving freely and unconditionally.??

Beyond what we can do as individuals, organizations and corporations provide their significant resources to help out the communities in which they are a part.??This promotes good will and allows the company to return a portion of their earnings back into the community.??These steps tend to result in growth for the company and increased brand awareness.??

If you have not taken time to volunteer, look around your community, connect with volunteer organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross, your local hospital or library, to name a few.??Even one hour per month can make a difference.??Volunteers ensure that when the need is greatest, they are the greatest people you will want to see.
