We're a learning partner for governments, public servants & the changemakers leading the charge to reimagine government.
Hello,
Stewardship is a crucial concept for those working in the public sector. However, in practice, it can take different forms. For example, as a steward, do you prioritise efficiently delivering on goals or focus on building relationships and empowering others? Do you focus on taking action and changing behaviours, or the values and mindsets that drive them?
At the Centre for Public Impact Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, we’ve developed a Stewardship Matrix and quiz to support our partners in interrogating these questions and their approach to stewardship.
The Stewardship Matrix explores two key spectrums – your orientation as a steward (being vs doing) and what your stewardship serves (efficiency vs relationships). This creates four quadrants representing distinct styles:
Identifying your current stewardship style can reveal insights about your preferences, biases, and work settings. For example, a tendency toward "efficiency” over “relationships” may reflect a bias for action common in government. Recognising your style also allows you to consciously shift approaches when needed.
Understanding your stewardship approach can help you better navigate complex situations and consciously adapt your style to suit the context. Read the blog to learn about our experience using this to recognise an efficiency bias and how it helped us to prioritise relationship-building.
Take our quick quiz to explore your style and consider how embodying different styles could benefit your work.
