Take Me To the (Auto) Pilot.

A week ago I tested positive for COVID. I ached all over and couldn’t think clearly.
Luckily, one thing I found I could do, is what I do every day:
Sit at my desk and go through my routine of writing and communicating. As I was writing through the fog this week, I thought to myself, How can I be doing this? Then, it came to me.
I was on autopilot.
This is the power of developing habits which lead to routines. In 1958 W.H. Auden wrote,
Routine, in an intelligent person, is the sign of ambition.
Even at 72, I’m pretty ambitious.
When you’re performing your daily routines whether it’s exercising, reading, creating, or writing, we’re cementing our ambitions. And our intentions.??
We’re blurring the lines between what we must do, what we enjoy doing, and what has become a part of us.
And through our routines we’re developing consistency.
While it may not seem like we’re building the consistency muscle through our routines, it’s happening.
Think of it like a bank account. Every time you go through our routine, you’re making a deposit. After a while your reserves are high, so that when the time comes, and you really don’t feel like doing it, you can execute your routine on autopilot.
Serena Williams said,
When I play, I go into a zone where my body just takes over. I've done it so many times that my muscles just know what to do. It’s almost like I'm running on autopilot.
So, Here’s your Action Item and Mission, should you decide to accept it:
Are you worried that the same, boring routine isn’t getting you anywhere? Think again.
Here’s three things that can help you keep up your routine:
1. In your daily Journal include a First Things First (FTF) section. Write down the essentials for the day that keep you on your path, no matter how distant the end is.?
2. Keep track of your progress. It will inspire and motivate you to keep going.
3. Get the idea that nothing is happening, out of your head. Things don’t happen overnight. Success doesn’t happen in an instant. It’s the daily, consistent routines that carve a path through the rocks.
George Leonard said,
Consistency brings mastery.
He’s right. Your routines of today will make you a master of tomorrow. Keep doing them.?
??Please share this if you think others would benefit from a little encouragement to keep going.
Remember, one hand washes the other, and together they get clean. Thank you for reading. Have a really rewarding week and I’ll see you next time.
