Take Matters Into Your Own Hands - Building Self-Autonomy

Introduction

Systemic barriers have long stifled Black women entrepreneurs, despite our education, experience, and passion. A recent court case that halted a grant program specifically for Black women is a stark reminder of the challenges we face. In June 2024, a major setback for minority business funding occurred as a U.S. Court of Appeals blocked the Fearless Fund, a Black-owned investment firm, from awarding grants solely to Black women entrepreneurs. This decision came after a lawsuit from Ed Blum, a conservative legal strategist, alleged discrimination and that the Fearless Fund’s grant program for Black women was in violation of the Civil Rights Act of 1866.?

Fearless Fund Co-Fouder and CEO Arian Simone has taken a strong activist stance in this fight, calling on the President of the United States to issue an Executive Order protecting DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) and the right to fund specific marginalized groups if and when racial disparities exist.?

This isn't just about one setback. Statistics show Black women entrepreneurs are denied access to traditional funding sources despite their qualifications. According to the 2023 State of Black Women-Owned Businesses Report?:?

  • Bootstrapping is the most common source of startup capital for Black women-owned businesses, including personal savings (95%) and personal credit cards (36%). Other capital sources remain inaccessible.
  • A meager 4% of Black women entrepreneurs surveyed have ever been awarded a grant or crowdfunded. Only 3% of respondents have received loans, and only 2% have been backed by investors.
  • ?For Black women entrepreneurs, lack of merit is not perceived as the top barrier to funding access from financial institutions. Instead, this demographic is omitted from the warm hand-offs that fuel the industry.

As Ayana Parsons, Co-founder of Fearless Fund, eloquently states: "We cannot wait for permission to be free.”

That's where self-autonomy comes in. By building our own paths and creating residual income streams, we break free from dependence on a system that undervalues us. Blaze Group understands this struggle intimately. We're here to equip you with the tools and support you need to take control of your future and rewrite the narrative.

Ayana Parsons: An Inspiration for Self-Made Success

Ayana Parsons, the Co-Founder and General Partner at the Fearless Fund, played a pivotal role in establishing the Fearless Fund in 2019, marking it as the first venture capital fund specifically created by women of color for women of color. This initiative was born out of a desire to address and eliminate the racial and gender disparities prevalent within the venture capital landscape.?

Ayana's list of achievements is nothing short of impressive, reflecting her commitment to excellence and empowerment within the business world. From co-founding the groundbreaking Fearless Fund to running her own venture, AKP Management LLC, and collaborating on Yardstick Management, one of the nation's leading Black-owned management consulting firms, Ayana's entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to uplifting marginalized communities shine through in her every endeavor.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Ayana's journey is how she leveraged entrepreneurship not only to achieve professional success but also to create a life that aligns with her values and aspirations. Over the years, Ayana has diligently built her assets, paving the way for wealth creation that affords her family the freedom to make choices that bring fulfillment and happiness. Her commitment to residual income, ownership, and self-sufficiency serves as a powerful example of how entrepreneurship can be a transformative force in one's life.

Building Your Path to Freedom

Residual income, such as investments and assets, can help generate a steady stream of income that allows you to take control of your financial well-being. When combined with entrepreneurship, this creates a dynamic duo that allows you to create additional income streams. Ownership plays a key role in self-sufficiency, allowing you to make choices that align with your values while generating wealth for yourself and your family.

Freedom & Self-Sufficiency: The Blaze Group Core Value

At Blaze Group, self-sufficiency and the freedom it unlocks are more than just buzzwords – they're the very foundation upon which we stand. We understand the yearning for autonomy, especially for Black women who often face systemic barriers in the corporate world.

That's why we, as the leaders of Blaze Group, have taken bold steps in our own lives. We left behind traditional careers, leveraging our knowledge and experiences to build a life less ordinary. We travel the globe, chasing adventure while empowering other women to chase their dreams through entrepreneurship.

For us, freedom means the ability to go wherever we want, whenever we want. It's a value we fiercely hold dear. Casey, our founder and CEO, embodies this spirit. She's traversed continents, living in South Africa, Kenya, and currently resides close to family in Alabama. Hannah, a Blaze consultant, chose a similar path, living in London and the Dominican Republic before deciding to return home. All these choices were made on our own terms, a testament to the power of self-sufficiency.

As a monologue from For Colored Girls states, [too often] “Somebody almost walked off wid all [our] stuff.”? It's time to break free from limitations and build the future we deserve.?

Freedom isn't just a feeling – it's a state of being. We believe Black women deserve the freedom to pursue their passions and design a life on their own terms. But how do we achieve this kind of self-sufficiency? Here's a 5-step plan to get you started:

1. Define Your Freedom:

Before diving headfirst, take a deep breath and identify what freedom truly means to you. Do you dream of escaping the 9-to-5 grind? Traveling the world on your own schedule??

Passion is the fuel that propels your journey. Identify what truly ignites your soul, what problems you're uniquely positioned to solve. The Blaze Group App is your comprehensive entrepreneurial toolkit. We offer a wealth of resources, from business plan templates to marketing guidance, to empower you on your path to success.

The road to success is rarely traveled alone. Connect with other Black women entrepreneurs. Share experiences, offer encouragement, and learn from each other's triumphs and challenges. Blaze Group fosters a vibrant community of like-minded women ready to uplift and empower one another.

5. Embrace the Journey:

Building self-sufficiency takes time, dedication, and perseverance. There will be obstacles, but with focus and the unwavering support of Blaze Group, you can overcome them. Celebrate your victories, big and small, and never lose sight of the freedom you're striving to create.

6. Explore Residual Income Streams:

Financial independence is a cornerstone of self-sufficiency. Consider building passive income streams that generate revenue even when you're not actively working. Blaze Group offers resources on various options, including:

  • Digital Products: Turn your expertise into eBooks, online courses, or printables. These can provide ongoing income while you build your audience.
  • Real Estate: Invest in rental properties or explore crowdfunding real estate platforms to generate passive income.
  • Stocks, Bonds & Mutual Funds: Building a diversified investment portfolio can provide long-term growth and income. Blaze Group may even offer educational content to help you navigate this option.

Conclusion

We know the road to freedom isn't always smooth. There will be obstacles and setbacks, just like the case against the Fearless Fund. But remember, Blaze Group isn't some distant entity offering guidance. We're on this journey with you, every step of the way. We built Blaze because we, too, crave self-sufficiency and the freedom to chase our dreams. Let's take these key takeaways – defining your freedom, building residual income, igniting your entrepreneurial spirit, charting a course, and finding support – and turn them into action. Don't wait for the "perfect" moment. Take that first step today. Together, we can rewrite the narrative and claim the freedom we deserve.
