WRITING CONTENT FOR POSTS, ARTICLES, BLOGS AND NEWSLETTERS MEANS YOU HAVE TO BE SURE YOU'VE FOUND YOUR TONE OF VOICE...
...AND AUTHORITY.
Welcome back to Edition 5 of Take the Lead.
We're joined by 4168 readers and I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for being here, sharing the world of conversations in business and how to make every single one count.
In this edition I promised to share thoughts around sounding the same in real life as online and vice versa. My ambition is for those conversations to happen over the telephone however we all know communication happens in various forms which is why you have to be the same wherever we're 'speaking'!?
An interesting fact I discovered this week is why we don't like the sound of our own voice when we hear ourselves played back. Our brains perceive our recorded voices differently and it all comes down to the way sound travels through air versus through a solid. Simple physics.
It made me wonder because it has taken many years to become comfortable with my own voice and I often reassure clients I'm coaching that it's quite natural too.
However my voice has become my signature.
One of the biggest challenges to hearing yourself back is being able to separate how you sound from what you are saying.
It's why I also read aloud every piece of content I produce to be sure it sounds like me.
That's my top WendyWoo tip for sounding the same online as in person. It will also help you when you're having a conversation.
Isn't it funny though, how each week my encouragement for you to Take the Lead is also supported by a business conversation on my podcast show, Making Conversations Count?!?
We Carry on the Conversation with our bonus content on Sundays for Followers only and always want listeners to feel they can reach out and speak to guests after getting to know them on the show through our conversation.
So, I am leading with that this week as it flows nicely from a few previous business conversations with Marcus Sheridan and Michael Buzinski around what you say, where.
Should you hear something that makes you raise a question, don't hold it in. Get in touch. It's likely to be a great question better answered than festering.
There's no such thing as a dumb question.
Which is why I asked Joe Pulizzi, as I call him Godfather of Content, to join me to share his insights. You see, I did advertising way back in the day and it was, and still is, a highly competitive world. Much like the online channels we have today, there's access to anything we want to know from someone.
If you're not the one answering the questions before it warrants a conversation you'll move on until you find someone open enough to tell you.
Only last night, my husband and I questioned the cost of something and visited several websites looking for the pricing.
Only one out of five sites gave us the answer, stated clearly on the website.
It's who we enquired with. Would you feel the same? Or are you happy to give away your email address to anyone to find out one simple question when you know you're going to be asked multiple questions to get there?
Those first impressions are oh so important.
Why do you create content online?

Here's where some go wrong:
Don't make it all about:?
Brand awareness - self
Create authority - self
Higher rankings - self
Instead, make it about
Showing understanding - them
Sharing experiences - them
Build trust - them
Sure, the self stuff is important but it's not how you:
Take the Lead.?
It's why my clients come back from 15 years ago (I made many mistakes in the first couple of years) as we grow together.?What you say and how you say it matters.
Which brings us back rather nicely about Joe's conversation.?
The truth about 'overnight success'.

When you hear honesty it gives you the feels good. It's my core value. What works for one may not work for another. If you need to be starting more conversations and want an honest opinion tap me up for a ChinWAG. No hard sell from me.
Remember, you never know where a conversation will lead...so, it's up to you to take the lead.
