Take Imperfect Action

Taking imperfect action isn’t about being impulsive. It’s about being clear on what you want and taking steps to get there. Doing so will help you gain clarity and knowledge. When you take imperfect action, you will grow as a person and begin to open yourself up to new ideas and opportunities.

When you spend all of your time overthinking and getting a lot of opinions, you can miss out on the valuable opportunity to experiment, gather data, enjoy the process, and reach conclusions.

If things are imperfect, we often find ourselves in fear of criticism and rejection. So we sabotage ourselves, believing that we don’t know enough or are not good enough to take action. Thinking we have to be perfect holds us back.

Often the solution is to take imperfect action.

You will learn to trust your intuition and abilities by taking imperfect action. As a result, your confidence will skyrocket, and those voices in your head telling you that you can’t do it will subside.

If you’re not willing to take small imperfect actions, you’ll never make progress. Initially, it may feel uncomfortable and messy, but it will propel you to greater levels of achievement and success.

In most cases, completing something at 70 to 80 percent is better than the procrastinator who waits for perfection to act. But, of course, there are apparent exceptions to this way of thinking—when perfectionism does matter.

Shifting your thinking from perfect to progress takes the pressure off of getting it perfect.

Ask yourself, “What if I knew what I was doing? What if I had all the answers? How would I approach this?” And then do it! Put together an action plan and complete it to the best of your ability. It won’t be perfect. It never has to be. You will change and tweak things in real-time as needed.

The person in life that genuinely fails at anything is the perfectionist who takes no action towards anything meaningful.

It’s a great day to start a great week.

charles Anderson, very good advice! Perfection can be the enemy of good. Sure, we need a surgeon to be pretty darn close to perfect. But there are many situations where "good" is good enough and most importantly, gets the ball rolling and offers the opportunity to learn, to grow, to expose us to alternative solutions and paths forward. There is an excellent book by David McCullough about the story of the Wright Brothers. They were anything but perfect but they had many, many very good steps forward and we all know how it worked out!
