“I have to start a job search.”
These words probably rank among the planet’s scariest utterances.
They induce dread, fatigue, nervousness, anticipation, and confusion.
But they also embody hope. Every time you seek to change your situation, you give yourself a chance to make a new discovery.
Here are some things you can do to minimize your stress and stay focused:
1?. Don’t watch too many videos on job searching.
You will find a lot of content on interviewing, resume construction, and salary negotiation. It will get overwhelming listening to the interpretations of this content, wondering what advice to follow, and what to ignore.
Know that there are basic elements to a search that haven’t changed for decades. They are still reliable.
Which leads us to this next set of actions you can take:
2?. Put your focus where it belongs: On your preferences, your network, and your fitness for the role.
Consider what role you want and where you want to work. What type of work puts you in the “zone” where you shine? What work conditions are best for you? Seek companies that are a fit.
When you see a posting for a job you think you might like, research it before applying. Talk to someone who works there. Read the website and any news coverage about the company. If you decide you want to apply, reach out to let the recruiter (if there is one) know, or determine who might be/or is the hiring manager, and write to this person expressing interest.
You might score a screening call and then you can ask more questions and showcase your fitness for the role.
3?. Activate your network.

Get in touch with former colleagues and bosses, vendors and clients you worked with in previous jobs, and your own inner circle of friends to ask them if you can chat and get feedback as you explore possibilities.
You never know who has contacts that can help you.
Always thank them for their time! Send a note after your meeting. Ask if you can keep in touch.
4?. Clarify and compile your work achievements and get them into your resume and your LinkedIn profile.
Make them relevant to the role and industry where you are seeking your next job. Pay attention to what employers are requiring in that field. Research common industry problems and challenges. Adjust your content to show you have dealt successfully with similar situations.
If you focus on these areas, you assuredly will make some progress. You will:
Understand the requirements of the role.
???Know where you want to work and why.
???Build connections that can help you get an interview.
???Be ready for opportunities that come your way.
Getting in the door is your first job. Focus on it, and good things will come your way.
You can do it!
