Associations you need to engage are the SBA (Small Business Association), SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives), BNI (Business Network International) or a word of mouth relationship group, a local Chamber of commerce, the National Federation of Independent Business and a relevant Industry and Trade association. Each creates access to small business loans, networks of like-minded thinkers, mentoring programs from successful business owners, entrepreneurship seminars, small business advocacy and lobbying efforts, local economic research and cutting edge trends in your profession. When paired with casual contact networks, business development networks, professional development groups, community service organizations and joining a Board of Directors, you have avoided being a cave dweller. Be visible and increase your credibility!
