Take a bow
Take a bow people of India....
Africa is an amazing place. It is the second- largest continent in the world both in size and population. It has the world's longest river and largest desert, tallest and largest land animals. Yes you can name them in your mind and smile. It’s home to more than 40 different nations and around 2,000 languages. Sub-Saharan Africa has six of the world’s 10 fastest-growing economies.
It also has the world's newest country. After 1.5 million people lost their lives, and 4 million were displaced, in a 20 year guerrilla warfare, South Sudan became an independent country in 2011. And South Sudan ranks third lowest in the latest UN World happiness report, third lowest on the global peace index. Sometimes people call it the saddest country of Africa, and some call it the poorest of Africa.
The civil war that broke out in 2013, has killed almost 400,000 people and displaced 4 million people (25% of the population). The country has a population of 12 million, but 2.5 million of them fled to neighbouring countries, running for their lives. Where 80% of the population is poor, the addition of violence in the lives of common people has made it very difficult for them to sustain.
Yes you can take a pause and feel thankful that our problems are of a different kind, and kinder than those faced by our fellow humans in South Sudan.
The United Nations has banned all countries from exporting weapons to South Sudan. Many countries have told the UN that they will send their soldiers anywhere but South Sudan. In such times, if soldiers from some other country go to South Sudan and ensure peace in this volatile country, it is not just that they are performing their duties. It is these brave-hearts risking their lives for anything lesser than the whole of humanity.
Yes these daredevils are from Indian Army. They have helped reduce violence drastically in this country. The UN says that India should be proud of their army, they have saved many lives.
Take a bow, people of #India! Some 135 of your peacekeeping troops, based in #SouthSudan and serving with #UNMISS, have received @UN medals for their outstanding performance in Jonglei State and the Greater Pibor Administrative Area," the UN Mission in South Sudan tweeted Monday (UNMISS).
Indian Army lives and breathes their motto - service before self. How many of us can live this motto in our corporate lives. It’s for us to ponder upon. Let's do our bit, in whatever small possible.
