Take Baby Steps

I?recently chatted with a?young professional ?looking for ways to achieve his career goals. Let’s nickname him Joel. The future looked so far away, and all he wants is how to hit his career goals immediately.

Are you like Joel?

I know that feeling. You want to be declared a winner and feel accomplished immediately. You want to forget you ever had to work hard without success to achieve your goals.

Most times, goals don’t happen overnight. They take time to achieve and require a lot of work.

Here’s some advice if you feel inadequate and want to rush towards your goals fast.

Hold on to your goal

Focus is important here.

With many things in the world competing for our attention, it is needless to say, the first thing you need is to focus on your goal.?Distractions? are everywhere. One moment you remember to work towards your goal. The other moment, your phone vibrates, and your attention is split into a million places.

Focusing on your goal will help you work towards it.

Start small

Starting small ensures you don’t put a lot of burden on yourself.

Imagine not reading a book in one year, and then suddenly you want to finish reading a book in one day. Even if you did, chances are you will burn out.

Burnout and exhaustion are not fun.

Imagine wanting to do something you have never done before at light speed. Take it easy on yourself by starting small and taking baby steps.

The goal is to start small without too much hassle and without burning out. Whatever your goal is, make sure you start small.

Be patient with yourself

Remember to take it easy on yourself as you go. You must look after yourself in this new world where everything completes for pair attention. Your mental health and well-being are more important than anything else.

Only a healthy person can achieve goals. You can’t change your dreams when you are no more. Whatever you do, remember to prioritise your health needs first. You need the health oil to keep moving, so take it easy on yourself and prioritise yourself first.

Forgive yourself

No doubt there will be days when you haven’t achieved your deliverables or smaller goals. You need to move on as soon as possible and forgive yourself. You will fall behind. There’s no questioning that. The family will take more time, and work can, friends can or even things you didn’t even think or imagine. Be ready to accommodate anything that flies your way unexpectedly, and forgive yourself quickly if you haven’t met other goals.

Remember, you are your best friend, so you should always forgive and befriend yourself no matter what. This will also help you get on quickly and forge ahead as you work towards your goals.

Consistency wins

Consistently winning is everything.

There’s no overnight success. For example, if you want to learn to drive a car, you’d need to put in dedicated hours per day and multiple days a week to achieve this goal. You won’t go from zero to hero in one hour. You can’t master how to drive a car and master all the lessons involved. It’s near impossible.

Think long-term and be consistent with your goals. Take baby steps every day. Get quick wins. And you will win. Consistency over a period also helps you stay fit and have a reservoir of energy to keep going.

Remember, focus on the long-term gains over the short-term stress.

Closing thoughts

Everyone wants to achieve their goals as soon as possible. The reality is that most successes do not happen overnight.

It’s important to focus on your goal by having a vision, starting small, being patient with yourself, forgiving yourself when you fall and being consistent over the long term to achieve this goal.

That’s how you win.

Keep going.
