Let's go!

The Role of Somatics in Stress Management ??

Stress is essentially our body's response to something external that we feel internally as a sensation, whether real or perceived.

It's a natural process of adaptation to stimuli, yes I said natural ??

It's not the big nasty everyone makes it out to be! ??

The problem comes when we don't adapt to these "stimuli" effectively and continue to internalise the activation that has happened

It's this continued internalisation that can lead to chronic stress, which we all know can negatively impact our mental and physical health

Somatic practices focus on the body's sensations and the physical experience of the activation

By engaging in Somatics, you can become more attuned to your bodily sensations associated with the stimulus or stressor

This relationship of listening is the first step in managing stress

Because it allows you to recognise and connect with it on a physical level.

Once there is a relationship of listening, somatics can help to actively discharge the stress feelings.

The first step is to build a relationship with the stimulus that is causing an activation in you

Feeling its impact on the body

Like

?? Tight shoulders

?? Clenched Jaw

?? A knot in your stomach

Knowing and identifying this is such power

Rather than ignoring or suppressing these signs

The next step is to MOVE! ????

Movement is our first and most primal language NOT SPEECH ????

You can't think your way out of an emotion that you are FEELING

You have to move it!

This could be activities like dance or more subtle practices like tai chi, depending on what you find works the best for you for your

Abilities and Personality

The key is that the movement is used as a form of expression and release, helping to process and let go of the stored stress.

Why I Told My Client To STOP Jounalling and Meditating For Her Stress Levels ??

We had a new client join us last week from Australia

She was on the verge of a breakdown

But she was journaling, doing her affirmations and visualising every day!

We told her to STOP THAT!

Why?

We are all told by the experts (even me) to

?? Journal

?? Breathe

?? Meditate

But the problem is that it can turn into another TO DO thing that you tick off a list

It's something you feel you HAVE to do to "fix" yourself

Instead, we asked them to just BE and "do" nothing

Take the time that you spent in journalling and doing all the "well-being tick list chores" and do NOTHING

Just BE!

After all, we are human BEINGS, not human DOINGS right

And from that place of just BEING organic, intuitive AND inspired action takes place

And that might look like

?? Breathing

?? Meditating

?? Journalling

But the intention and energy to it is so different

Even just the notion of not having to do it was a huge relief for her

But it turns out she did journal and it was super powerful stuff!

Quick Tips for being a Human BEING

  1. Start Small: Begin with a five-minute body scan each morning. Notice areas of tension and consciously relax them with some sort of movement
  2. Movement Breaks: Integrate short, mindful movement breaks into your day to reconnect with your body’s needs and sensations.
  3. Questions: As you journey through this week, we invite you to pause and ask yourself: "Am I being, or am I doing?" then just sit and wait for the answer, it will happen!

Experts Corner ??

We want to introduce you to a mentor of ours

Dr Scott Lyons ??

He is a clinical psychologist and co-author of "The Drama Detox", which highlights the importance of recognising our patterns of 'addiction to drama'.

He suggests that many of us engage in over-dramatizing everyday stresses, which enhances our stress levels rather than alleviating them.

By adopting somatic practices, we can shift our focus from external dramas to internal peace and awareness, which helps in breaking the cycle of stress and reactivity.
