Yoga and Therapy Fail to Tackle Burnout at High-Pressure Law Firms ??

This was sent to me by a client just last week with their response being

"Piece in the Telegraph this morning. Who knew? Ah yes, you did!"

To me, this screams of a "tick box" exercise, and putting out the fires strategy, which I know a lot of my fellow HR trainers will agree with here

We all know that this happens in companies where they will buy them

  • Fruit baskets
  • Memberships to gyms
  • Subscriptions to Head Space or the Calm app

These are all lovely gestures BUT is it really helping?

  1. Yes workplace culture needs to be tackled
  2. Yes top management needs to be involved and "seen" to be doing
  3. BUT also there also needs to be a wanting from staff to actually get involved and help themselves (controversial I know)

Although burnout is not a "new" notion it is within the well-being and workplace space

People don't quite understand how to tackle this issue directly just yet so it's no surprise that Yoga and therapy are thrown in to try and solve the problem

My take on this is simple

  • It needs to be a 360 approach in any business
  • Workplace culture needs to change
  • Employees need to be surveyed so companies can understand what help they need
  • Ongoing support needs to be put into place

This is not a one workshop and it's all fixed

This is a commitment to your company and to your staff

How To Achieve Your Ideal Work-Life Harmony ?????

The irony is that I am going to follow up with this piece!

Sometimes the lines between work and life blur more each day.

Just like us, we know you are dedicated to your work and business and want to do a good job

However, like us and our clients, you might often find yourself juggling countless tasks, leaving little room for personal time.?

The methods are nothing new, shiny or revolutionary (nor should they be) BUT they do serve as an important reminder to keep these basics in place daily to be able to create a more balanced work-life so you can thrive not just personally but professionally too?

1. Set Clear Boundaries ??

This is not a new notion but boundaries help compartmentalise our lives, reducing the risk of work seeping into our personal time.

?2. Schedule Downtime ???

Again, not a new notion but just as you schedule important meetings and deadlines, it's crucial to schedule downtime. Whether it's a hobby, spending time with loved ones, or simply doing nothing, make sure these moments are marked on your calendar.?

?3. Learn to Say No ????

Another notion that is not new but one that's really difficult to do at times. If something doesn't align with your goals or threatens your balance, it's okay to politely decline. Remember, saying no to one thing means saying yes to something else—perhaps something more aligned with your personal well-being or business goals.

4. Reflect and Adjust ??

Finding the perfect work-life balance really is an ongoing process. We always encourage our clients to regularly reflect on their current balance—is it working for them, or do you feel overwhelmed? Always be prepared to adjust your strategies as your personal and business needs evolve.

Just to finish up here achieving work-life harmony is not about equally dividing the hours in your day between work and personal life.?

It's about having the flexibility to get things done in your professional life while having time and energy to enjoy your personal life.

Remember, you are at your best when your life has harmony.?

I'm curious about her A.C.E. method and how it differs from other approaches. If you can just give a gist of it.

Maybe it's also about how we're framing these practices? Like, if we pitch them not just as 'nice-to-haves' but as essential tools for peak performance (kinda like how athletes use mental coaching), we might see a shift. I've seen firsthand how small mindset shifts can lead to big changes in uptake. Curious to hear your thoughts on reframing the conversation around wellness in high-pressure industries!

With a law degree in my backpocket the one about high pressure law firms and burn-outs hits home. You're right, a full culture flip is needed. Free yoga is nice, but doesn't solve the problem. Laura Ash
