Last summer, we shared that Taiwan had plans for a six-month digital nomad visa designed to attract global talent and simplify the process for skilled, high-earning foreign workers to obtain permanent residence. Now, in the new year, the remote work visa has finally launched!
Currently, travelers from the United States can visit Taiwan visa-free for up to 90 days. To boost innovation, Taiwan plans to invest $4.5 billion annually in entrepreneurship, with hopes that the new visa program will highlight the country’s excellent living conditions and tourism potential to foreigners.
How safe is Taiwan?
The State Department classifies Taiwan under its lowest security designation, Level 1, advising Americans to take normal precautions. The country aims to attract digital nomads, hoping that 10% of them will choose to stay long-term. Taiwan hopes to welcome 10,000 digital nomads by 2028 and 400,000 by 2032. One of them might just be me and my trusty 13-inch laptop!
How do I apply for the remote work visa?
To apply, you’ll need to work remotely and have earned $60,000+ last year (if you’re 30 or older) or $24,000+ (if you’re 20–29). With its subtropical weather, majestic temples, LGBTQ+ inclusivity postcard-worthy landscapes, and a visa that aligns with Japan’s and South Korea’s, Taiwan is easy to bop over to!?
